The participation of the African Civil Society at WSIS Forum16 was a great success: We organized two panels of the highest level which were enhanced by the presence of very high personalities including Mr. Houlin Zhao Secretary General of the ITU, several Ministers (South Africa, Sudan, Senegal, Guinea, etc.) African ambassadors and senior officials in charge of ICT. In the opinion of many observers, we organized panels among the best at the Forum.

We are also very proud to have developed a great complicity with African ministers and officials, we met during the forum Geneva. Our two panels allowed us to establish very strong guidelines on the implementation of the recommendations of the WSIS in Africa including issues of funding, but also on linking practice between ICT and the United Nations sustainable development goals. Among these guidelines include:

  • The need for Africa to have a vision and strong leadership in the field of digital economy and how to better capture resources generated by ICT.

The best and most efficient ways and means redirecting those resources to finance Africa development

  • The urgent need for all ICT stakeholders to work better together for the development of Africa

  • The need for development of ambitious programs of quality human resource training

  • The implementation of the link between ICT and ODD as African economies Development Index

  • Continued investments in infrastructure and broadband in particular to lower the costs of connection and roaming

The recommendations on the issues of funding and implementation were made possible thanks to the upstream work of ACSIS commission on funding and implementation chaired by Judy Okite, composed by Remmy Nweke, Pierre Chekem, Delphine Nana , Akinremi Peter Taiwo, Chris Prince Udochukwu Njoku, Baudoin Schombe and Cissé Kane. This commission has clarified topics selection for our panels.

In this regard, we plan to organize in the coming months, the first pan-African Summit on the digital economy and sustainable growth in Africa.

Aside from the two panels organized by ACSIS; the President of ACSIS was honored to represent the African Civil Society to the organizing committees of the 2016 Forum as a high-level facilitator.

In this regard, he moderated a high-level session on bridging digital divides and took part as high level panelist to a workshop on issues related to the knowledge society. All the results of these sessions are available on our website.

Africa marked its presence in Geneva and the African Civil Society has largely contributed. Arguably the 2016 FORUM vibrated through the substantial contribution of Africa in the debates with the unanimously recognized role played by the African Civil Society on the Information Society.

Many Thanks to the ITU, Secretary General Hon. Houlin Zhao and all ITU staff, to honorable ministers and African ambassadors, as well as all of our ECA partners, ICANN, Diplo Foundation, APC, Yahoo Japan, the CESIR, etc. We take this opportunity to thank all ACSIS members for their exceptional mobilization at all levels that allowed the success of our participation in the WSIS FORUM 2016!
